  64. About the Trial Version
  65. -----------------------

  67. The Superbase Professional 4 Trial disk contains trial versions of both
  68. Superbase Professional 4 and the Superbase Form Designer. These trial
  69. versions are designed to demonstrate the benefit of Superbase with the
  70. aim of encouraging you to go out and buy the full product. As a result,
  71. there are some limitations to what you can do with the Trial version:
  72.  
  73. Superbase:
  74.         * Only 35 records may be saved in any database file.
  75.         * DML programs may be edited, but not saved.
  76.  
  77. Form Designer:
  78.         * Forms may be edited or created, but not saved.
  79.         * The Print option is disabled.
  80.  
  81. In every other respect, the Trial version is a fully functioning product.
  82.  
  83. The trial version includes a fully-customised application for an
  84. international trader in stocks and shares. Don't worry if you are not
  85. familiar with this business. the application is designed to reflect the
  86. development capabilities of Superbase professional 4 rather than the
  87. activities of a particular enterprise.

  90. Hardware Requirements
  91. ---------------------
  92.  
  93. To use this Trial installation of Superbase Professional 4, you will need
  94. the following hardware:
  95.  
  96. * Amiga A500, A1000, A1500, A2000, A2500, A3000, A3000T
  97. * Amiga kickstart and Workbench Version 1.3 or higher
  98. * Minimum 1MB RAM
  99. * Minimum 2 floppy drives or 1 floppy plus a hard drive
  100.  
  101. The following hardware extensions make Superbase easier to use:
  102.  
  103. * Additional memory
  104. * Hard drives
  105. * Processor accelerators
  106. * Display enhancers
  107.  
  108.  
  109. Hard disk Installation
  110. ----------------------
  111.  
  112. You will require approximately 1.5 megabytes of disk space. You will also
  113. need to have a copy of LHARC somewhere in your path.
  114.  
  115. 1. Copy the entire contents of the SBdemo drawer onto your hard drive (you
  116. may do this by simply dragging the SBdemo drawer icon onto the icon for
  117. your hard drive).
  118.  
  119. 2. Open a shell window by double-clicking on the Workbench Shell icon.
  120.  
  121. 3. Change directory to the SBdemo directory on your hard drive by typing
  122.  
  123.                 CD DH0:SBdemo
  124.  
  125. (if your hard drive is called something different, or you have copied the
  126. files to a different location, substitute your names as appropriate.)
  127.  
  128. 4. Type the following commands:
  129.  
  130.                 LHARC -x -a x SB4demo1
  131.  
  132. This will uncompress the Superbase program files.
  133.  
  134.                 LHARC -x -a x SB4demo2
  135.  
  136. This will uncompress the Superbase example files into a subdirectory
  137. called Trading.
  138.  
  139. 5. You will need to add the following line to your S:StartupII file:
  140.  
  141.                 Assign SBpro4: DH0:SBdemo
  142.  
  143. As before, if you have copied Superbase to a different location,
  144. substitute that location in the above command. The Assign is only
  145. required when you select MODIFY FORM from the Project menu, and is
  146. used for Superbase to find and load the Form Designer.
  147.  
  148.  
  149. Floppy disk Installation
  150. ------------------------
  151.  
  152. You will require two blank freshly formatted diskettes. You should
  153. also have access to the LHARC utility.
  154.  
  155. 1. Rename one diskette as "SBpro4". Rename the other as "SBdata".
  156. (You can do this by highlighting the diskette icon and selecting
  157. Rename from the Workbench menus.)
  158.  
  159. 2. Open a shell window by double-clicking on the WorkBench Shell
  160. icon.
  161.  
  162. 3. Change directory to the Superbase directory on the distribution
  163. diskette. e.g.
  164.  
  165.                 CD df0:SBdemo
  166.  
  167. 4. Type the following command:
  168.  
  169.                 LHARC -x -a x SB4demo1 SBpro4:
  170.  
  171. Follow any instructions that appear on the screen. You will be prompted
  172. to insert the diskette that you named "SBpro4" in any drive. If you
  173. only have a single drive Amiga, you will be required to make several
  174. disk swaps between this and the distribution diskette.

  176. 5. Type the following command:
  177.  
  178.                 LHARC -x -a x SB4demo2 SBdata:
  179.  
  180. Follow any instructions that appear on the screen. You will be prompted
  181. to insert the diskette that you named "SBpro4" in any drive. If you
  182. only have a single drive Amiga, you will be required to make several
  183. disk swaps between this and the distribution diskette.

  186. Using Superbase
  187. ---------------
  188.  
  189. To start Superbase from Workbench, simply double-click on the SBpro4 icon.
  190. To start Superbase from the Shell, type the following:
  191.  
  192.                 CD DH0:SBdemo
  193.                 SBpro4
  194.  
  195. Superbase requires a minimum stack setting of 12288 bytes when run from
  196. the CLI. To set this, type
  197.  
  198.                 STACK 12288
  199.  
  200. Superbase will open its main window and present you with the startup
  201. banner. This informs you of the version and release along with licence
  202. details. The banner can be recalled at any time by selecting About from
  203. the Project menu.

  206. Using the sample application
  207. ----------------------------
  208.  
  209. To start the sample application, run the program called "Menu", which is
  210. located in the Trading subdirectory on your SBdata diskette (or on
  211. your hard drive in DH0:SBdemo/Trading). To do this:
  212.  
  213. Select Open from the DML menu. You will be presented with a file selector.
  214. This lists Superbase programs in the left-hand column and directories /
  215. volumes / assigns in the right-hand column. If you double-click on the
  216. Trading subdirectory entry, Superbase will move to this directory and
  217. display a selection of programs. Double-click on the Menu program.
  218.  
  219. Now select Run from the DML menu. Superbase is now running the application.
  220.  
  221. The sample application puts you in the position of an international
  222. trader in stocks and shares. Don't worry if you are not familiar with
  223. the ins and outs of this business - it revolves around buying and selling
  224. just like any other. In any event the example is meant to reflect the
  225. development capabilities of Superbase Professional 4 rather than the
  226. activities of any particular business.
  227.  
  228. As the trader, you buy and sell stocks on behalf of clients around the
  229. world. Your clients are in different time zones. You deal in stocks quoted
  230. on various stock exchanges in various currencies and currency units.
  231. New York NASDAQ stocks are quoted in U.S. dollars for example, London
  232. stocks in pence and Tokyo stocks in yen. Like many businesses, your
  233. earnings are commission-based rather than profit-based. You earn a
  234. commission on each trade, whether it is a sale or a purchase. For
  235. reporting purposes, currency amounts are converted to U.S. dollars. You
  236. report each transaction made on behalf of a client by sending the client a
  237. contract note. This shows both the currency value and the dollar amount due
  238. on the transaction. Periodically you send statements to your clients,
  239. listing the transactions and reporting the net amount due to or from the
  240. client. You book batches of cash recipts and payments in dollars. from
  241. time to time you receive stock certificates for purchases made and forward
  242. each certificate to the appropriate client together with a certificate
  243. advice.

  245. The application is controlled via pull-down menus and push buttons which
  246. you may click on. A status line at the bottom of the screen indicates
  247. either what Superbase is doing, or what it is expecting you to do.
